The Family and Art Lab Programs Coordinator is responsible for creating an inclusive and engaging learning environment for multigenerational audiences through programs, events, resources, and installations. The Family and Art Lab Programs Coordinator plays a central role coordinating studio programs and workshops and working directly with audiences visiting the ICA’s Bank of America Art Lab through school, community, and family visits. The Coordinator identifies and implements new opportunities for family and youth engagement at the ICA, including at the ICA Watershed. This individual collaborates with various museum departments to ensure that youth and families have an enriching experience engaging with contemporary art. This is a full-time, salaried position.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and maintain all logistical aspects of the ICA’s Bank of America Art Lab and its interactive installations, including communicating with guest artists and educators, organizing internal calendar and digital content, and ensuring the space’s activation for year-round diverse audiences
    • The Coordinator is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Art Lab, including managing and restocking materials and equipment.
      • The Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and communicating staff schedules for the Art Lab and studio programs.
  • Serve as a Lead Educator in the Art Lab and other studio programs. Train and support staff in facilitating art-making experiences.
  • Design, plan, and oversee the ICA’s monthly Play Date program for families with activities that promote experiential and collaborative learning experiences; Manage staff, volunteers, and contractors working event; Support interdepartmental collaborations to insure successful museum-wide implementation
  • Support all program initiatives for families at the ICA, such as designing, developing, and implementing interpretive resources for families to explore contemporary art together; working with Visitor Experience Manager to insure successful implementation of Books + Looks program; training staff to lead Books + Looks; recruiting, training, and scheduling volunteers to support family programs; tracking program volunteer participation and celebrate their contributions; identifying and developing other opportunities for family audiences at the ICA to connect to contemporary art
  • Coordinate and implement all logistics around Art (Co) Lab, the ICA’s pilot program for middle school-aged youth; Work with School and Family Programs Manager to identify and implement additional opportunities to expand reach within youth and family audiences
  • Develop and deliver studio workshops for K-12 group visits that fosters connection, understanding, and appreciation of contemporary art and culture
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships and partnerships with visual and performing artist/educators and Boston organizations serving youth and families; Hire, supervise, and support teaching artists and contractors
  • Work collaboratively with artists to develop workshops and lesson plans for diverse, multigenerational audiences
  • Develop and coordinate strategies that aim to expand audiences from neighboring communities of South Boston, Roxbury, Dorchester, and East Boston
  • Support all aspects of administration for family and Art Lab programs for internal and external purposes, including writing program descriptions for website, drafting event forms, entering and assessing program data, and more
  • Work with School and Family Programs Manager to coordinate digital strategy and content for the ICA’s Art Lab at Home website
  • Represent the ICA in city-wide meetings, conferences, and professional opportunities

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in art education, teaching, studio or fine art, child/human development, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of four years of related experience working with youth, family, and diverse audiences required; Experience teaching art to children and youth required
  • Knowledge and expertise in studio art practices (including art materials and techniques) needed
  • Previous event planning and project coordination experience; Must be very well organized with ability to multi-task effectively and meet multiple deadlines
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team capacity; Ability to collaborate cross-departmentally and serve as an enthusiastic leader in the Art Lab
  • Ability to work collegially, professionally, and collaboratively with a diverse group of constituents including staff, visitors, artists, and vendors
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Comfort in learning and using new tech applications
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to community outreach and racial/social equity; Working knowledge of Boston’s communities, a plus
  • Additional language proficiency other than English, a plus; Proficiency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese preferred), a plus
  • Must have Saturday availability: The schedule for this position is Tuesday – Saturday; Some evening and weekend work may be required for program needs

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of remaining stationary working on a computer, standing and/or moving about during art installations and events
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to move about in the office to access files, printers, etc., and in the Art Lab
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information with departments and with diverse and multigenerational audiences

Starting Salary: $48,500 Annual

Each ICA position has a job grade based on the position’s evaluated job responsibilities, required education and experience, needed skills to perform the job, and professional knowledge. The position’s grade and respective compensation range is determined by the position’s overall responsibilities, including decision making, supervisory/management requirements, resource management and budgeting duties.

Compensation is ultimately determined by the scope of the position and responsibilities, the candidate’s relevant experience, and internal equity, with starting salaries typically falling in the lower half of the compensation range.
