Trained in film and video, Chan has achieved much recent acclaim for a series of projected digital animations that blend a cartoon style similar to South Park or The Simpsons with deep moral reflections on politics and the war in Iraq. The critic Jerry Saltz has written that “Chan’s compassionate yet caustic politics, his visual intensity and graphic flair, are reminiscent of an artist like Keith Haring.” Chan’s work for the ICA wrestles with the complexities of religion in today’s political landscape. The centerpiece of the installation is an animation depicting an idiosyncratic vision of the Christian Rapture, projected onto the floor to resemble light and shadows cast from the central, vaulted window of the Momentum gallery. A hypnotic rise and fall of silhouetted forms, Chan’s rendition of the final judgment suggests many difficult questions in this moment of protracted war and resurgent evangelism.
