Thank you to everyone who joined us in May for our first ever virtual Play Date, Go with the Flow, where we explored ways to care for ourselves and each other and to stay flexible during these trying times. For June we’re back with a new schedule of live virtual workshops continuing to explore how we can care for each other. Using contemporary art as inspiration, we will dive into themes of identity and community. Join ICA educators for a day of contemporary art, making, and creating for care.
Live program schedule
Virtual workshops will be held on Zoom.
Exploring Art with Amy (ages 6+)
10:00 – 10:30 AM EST
Join ICA Educator Amy Briggs Kemeza for a live family-friendly art viewing session on Zoom. View and playfully explore contemporary artworks from the ICA’s collection. Children and adults are invited to attend together, recommended ages 6+. You’ll want to collect and bring paper and drawing materials for each participant.
Art Making for Littles (ages 5 and under)
11:00 – 11:30 AM EST
Join ICA educator Brooke Scibelli for an interactive art-making activity designed for children ages 5 and under and their adults to create a We Walk for your home or sidewalk! Work together to create a whimsical path for movement play and self-discovery. You’ll want to collect and bring these recommended materials:
- Thin cardboard like cereal boxes (as much as you can find!)
- Various types of paper (printer paper, scrap paper, newspaper, magazines, etc.)
- Scissors
- Drawing materials (pencils, markers, crayons, etc.)
- Tape (optional)
Art Making with Jessie:
Seeing (through) You (ages 6+)
1:30 – 2:30 PM EST
Join ICA educator Jessie Miyu Magyar in this interactive virtual workshop where you will learn an image transfer technique to create a collage with see-through images. You’ll explore the different parts of your identity, create a collage that represents you, and reflect on your connections to your community. You’ll want to collect and bring these materials:
- Scrap paper
- A pen or marker
- Images from magazines that represent you. Think about your culture, heritage, family, friends, community, personality, hobbies – All the things that make up who you are! Find and cut out images from magazines that represent these things. You don’t have to be literal in the images you choose and we encourage you think creatively and abstractly. Glossy magazine images work best (paper prints outs or newspapers will not work with this technique).
- Clear packing tape
- Scissors
- A bowl of water or spray bottle filled with water
- (Optional) A piece of paper or other surface to be your background for your collage
- (Optional) glue stick or tape
- (Optional) Extra 2D collage materials
- (Optional) Coloring/drawing tools
Yoga with Marlene (all ages)
3:00 – 3:30 PM EST
Join Boston-based yoga teacher Marlene Boyette for a live family-friendly yoga session on Zoom where we’ll explore finding balance and centering together through movement, stillness and breathing techniques. Children of all-ages and adults are invited to attend together.
Advanced registration required. Live virtual workshops will be held on Zoom. All activities are designed for kids and their grownups to participate together (adults participating must be accompanied by a youth). Recommended ages will be provided as a guide, but you know your child best! If you have questions about a particular workshop, don’t hesitate to reach us at familyprograms@icaboston.org.
